ClockColin Rayne is a Licentiate of the British Horological Institute founded in 1858 and specialises in Custom Made Quartz Clocks.

Copies of most of the clocks below are available to purchase and can be viewed either at The House of Rayne Gallery or IN SITU at various locations in the Brighton area, and beyond.

Copies and commissions are made to order delivery can take 4 to 12 weeks and will be confirmed at time of deposit.

 
 


Brain Clock

Brain ClockBrain ClockThe Brain Clock features a Cross-Section of the Human Brain, crafted from 15mm thick translucent acrylic, and mounted on a Polished Stainless Steel Fascia.

It has a Heavy Duty Quartz Movement, with a 9 inch Long Minute Hand.

Professor James Fawcett and his researchers commissioned the clock, funding it with the proceeds from House of Rayne's 2005 and 2006 Summer Exhibition Parties (value of clock: £850).

Stonehenge 2000 Clock

Stonehenge 2000 ClockA magnificent clock inspired by the Neolithic stones of Stonehenge, commissioned by the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton for their Millennium wing; 1999.

Kingston Brooch Clock

Kingston BroochThe Kingston Brooch, Saxon, three inches in diameter, was found on Kingston Down, Kent in 1771. It was subsequently displayed in the Liverpool museum; and illustrated in an archeological textbook from which Colin Rayne used it to form the basis of a private commission. Quartz movement.

Sutton Hoo Helmet Clock

Sutton Hoo HelmetInspired by the greatest "archeological find" of the 20th century; the Burial Ship of East Anglian King Raedwald; 624AD. The Helmet is perhaps the best known of the many artifacts on display in the British Museum.

Quartz movement. Embellished in copper, brass and enamel. Stained glass "eye sockets". Illuminated, 15" x 10".

Globe Theatre Clock

Globe Theatre ClockBased on Shakespeare's original Globe Theatre in London using similar wood to the actual theatre. Based upon a 14" polygon. The brass fascia shows the inside of the theatre with three acting players. Incorporates the heads of Queen Elizabeth I and William Shakespeare. Quartz movement.

Telecom Tower Clock

Telecom Tower Clock

DESIGN REGISTRATION: 3022219 TELECOM TOWER CLOCK
(DES.REG. FOR SALE: CIRCA: £2000)
This ‘outstanding’ clock is a ‘replica — model of London’s famous listed building (scale: 1”: 30’). Time is shown on the ‘rotating’ floor (formerly rotating restaurant). It is made from Acrylic and Steel, Illumination with L.E.DS

The replica is wall hanging in a glazed case, 18” High x 14” Wide,
set against a "surreal" skyline.

Time is shown on a rotating disc (at the position of the rotating restaurant, now closed) and powered by an electric motor. Lighting is low voltage long life L.E.Ds (Mains power required).

Commissioned by P.O. Telecommunications; This has been shown on BBC Television.

Butterfly on Leaf

Butterfly on LeafCreated especially for display in London's Goldsmiths Hall for the Clockmaker's first major exhibition in 1987. It was chosen by the eminent horologist George Daniel's F.B.H.I.

Turned and polished brass with two quartz movements. Glazed case 28" x 22". Wall mounted. Also displayed at The House of Rayne.

Metropole Hotel, 1993 Brighton, Napoleonic Clock

Metropole Hotel ClockInstalled on the hotel reception's marble mantle piece in 1993. The clock has remained there during both the hotels two changes of ownership (perhaps due to its "anti theft" device!).

Its face is based upon the geometric composition of London's Big Ben and the clock blends well with the classical interior of the hotel.

Quartz movement, Indian Rosewood veneer on MDF.

Rottingdean Place Swimming Pool clock (Jaws IV)

JawsThis clock is in the configuration of a shark with its head as the clocks face. At 4' long its wooden body, treated with protective yacht varnish, is decorated in marine style. Quartz heavy duty movement.

West Pier Clock

West PierCreated for the 1994 Brighton Festival; when the famous and controversial pier had only recently become detached from land.

Shoreline, shown to illustrate the relative size of the structure with the use of silhouetted figures; these also suggest the piers "demise".

20" x 12" ellipse; Lacquered Fascia; glass; quartz movement; chimes on the hour.

Palace Pier Clock

Palace PierCreated for the Brighton Festival exhibition in 1994, the pier has subsequently been renamed Brighton Pier.

An isometric view of the pier made of lacquered brass, within a 30" diameter circle. It incorporates an illuminated sign and a mini quartz clock within the tower. Wall hanging.
